Noises Off, presented by Tennessee Repertory Theatre, Feb.
26-March 12 in TPAC's Polk Theater
Michael Frayn's madcap 1982 farce has established itself as both a perennial
audience favorite and a distinctly challenging, all-in-the-timing workout
for actors capable of going over the top. The three-act comic adventure
glimpses a touring company of second-rate British actors, who, in the
course of performing a dotty play called "Nothing On," reveal
a welter of internecine backstage squabbling and tangled romantic complications.
The new Rep mounting is under the direction of René Copeland and
features a cast mostly comprising high-achieving local luminaries, including
David Alford, Matt Chiorini, Marin Miller, Jenny Littleton, Jeff Boyet,
Shelean Newman, Bobby Wyckoff and Joe Keenan. Accomplished Rep set designer
Gary Hoff provides the various multi-angled viewpoints, which take viewers
both in front of and behind the proscenium arch. Playwright Frayn has
written novels and more serious dramas, but this work is the one that
has etched his name firmly into theatrical annals. It was made into a
feature film by Peter Bogdanovich in 1992, starring Carol Burnett and
Michael Caine. For tickets, visit the TPAC box office (downtown or at
Davis-Kidd Booksellers in Green Hills), www.tnrep.org, or any Ticketmaster
outlet. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 615-255-ARTS.
